Pranav Gupta Explores Why Study-Abroad Goals Are Changing

For many years, Indian families believed that studying abroad was a quick way to get better jobs and a higher life. They thought that if they got into colleges in the US, Canada, the UK, or Australia, it would be worth the money. But now, people are starting to see that the place where you study might not be as important as the quality of the education itself. The numbers show fewer Indians traveling abroad for education.

Data from the government shows that the number of Indians saying they traveled to study abroad dropped from about 895,000 in 2023 to around 619,000 in 2025. This means fewer people are going abroad just for studying. In the US, the number of Indian students in 2024-25 was over 363,000, which is a bit more than the year before. But fewer Indians are enrolling in graduate programs, and more are taking part in work programs after graduation.

This shows that Indian students are becoming more selective about where they go and what they want to do after studying. Different countries are changing their rules about studying and working. For example, Britain will give students only 18 months instead of two years to stay after they finish their degree starting in 2027.

Canada plans to give fewer study permits in 2026. The US is thinking about charging a big fee for students who want to work after studying there, which could make it more expensive and complicated.

Pranav Gupta, a person who helps start universities, noticed this trend years ago. He saw that more countries in Europe and the Middle East are trying to attract students from India. This means that students are now exploring many different places to study, not just the US, UK, or Australia.
